Ask a question Description How to grow Description Onopordum the national emblem of Scotland and thought to have been selected by James V. Huge statuesque biennial plant with large prickly leaves covered with silver white web like hairs and large purple flowers. Can reach 8-10 feet when flowering. Absolutely loved by bumblebees!  As a biennial Onorpodum flowers in its second year of growth and will readily self-seed for future generations of this fabulous plant. RHS Perfect for Pollinators. The RHS Perfect for Pollinators mark is only given to plants that support pollinating insects in gardens. Bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies and many others visit flowers to feed on nectar and pollen; while doing so they transfer pollen and increase seed set and fruit development.  How to grow Sow as soon after harvest as possible (late summer early autumn)  onto good quality compost and cover to the same depth as the seeds.  Water well using a fine rose, compost can be watered well prior to sowing and then lightly.  Place in cold green house, cold frame or cool shady party of garden and leave to germinate naturally.  Usually 4 - 6 weeks but may take considerably longer with germination occurring in spring. Alternatively direct sow into prepared seed bed July - September.
