  • Hippophae rhamnoides - Sea Buckthorn
Sea Buckthorn is a very hardy deciduous shrub/tree native to Europe. This beautiful plant provides an abundance of highly nutritious orange berries in the autumn. A member of the  Elaeagnaceae  family, the plant associates with Frankia bacteria to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. This plant can withstand strong winds, tolerates drought, thrives in nutritionally poor soil and its thorny branches making this an ideal plant for a windbreak or hedging.
  • Elaeagnus umbellata - Autumn Olive
An very hardy fast growing shrub that produces tasty edible berries. The plant is ideal for hedging and windbreaks , tolerates drought and poor soils and l ike all the plants in this genus, has Nitrogen Fixing capabilities and when planted with fruit trees is said to increase the overall yield of the orchard by 10% whilst themselves producing a yield of berries.
  • Robinia pseudoacacia - Black Locust
Black locust is a rapidly growing, deciduous tree that is native to North America. This member of the pea and bean family (Leguminosae) has now naturalised  in many parts of Europe.  Its hanging clusters of scented, white flowers are well loved by bees that produce an excellent "Acacia" honey. The timber is very hard and rot resistant, making fine fence posts and round wood material.  Its a good tree for establishing on degraded land. It can become invasive due to its prolific seed production, and it also spreads aggressively by suckering from the roots.
  • Alnus cordata  - Italian Alder
The Italian Alder medium-sized  tree  grows up to 25 m tall. The  leaves  are  deciduous  but with a very long season in leaf, from April to December. Like other members of Alnus genus, it is able to  fix nitrogen  from the air. It thrives on much drier soils than most other alders, and grows rapidly even under very unfavourable circumstances, which renders it extremely valuable for landscape planting on poor soils  and heavily compacted sites. It is commonly grown as a  windbreak

  • Alnus incana  - Grey Alder

A very hardy (-41C) nitrogen fixing tree that can tolerate some shade, strong winds and grows very fast on poor soils makes this an excellent choice for a windbreak hedge as well as a fertility plant within a forest garden. The plant is also well suited to coppice management producing useful poles and logs relatively fast. Like other members of Alnus genus, it is able to  fix nitrogen  from the atmosphere.  It thrives on drier soils than most other alders, and grows rapidly even under very unfavourable circumstances, which renders it extremely valuable for landscape planting on poor soils  and heavily compacted sites. A good chop and drop plant.

  • Eleagnus angustifolia - Russian Olive
With its silvery foliage, stems and yellow fruits in October makes a very attractive plant. Like all the plants in this genus, Oleaster has Nitrogen Fixing capabilities and when planted with fruit trees is said to increase the overall yield of the orchard by 10% whilst themselves producing a yield of berries.  We have used this plant as an understory shrub on a south facing edge in our forest garden and to take advantage of its drought tolerance, in a dry bed on the outside of the property.

  • Gleditsia triacanthos  - Honey Locust
The Honey Locust is an impressive tree albeit a little hostile, what with the 15 cm thorns that protrude from all parts of the tree like living barbed wire. It is unusual in that although part of the legume family, this tree does not fix nitrogen, however its many other attributes make it a worthwhile occupant in the large garden and an invaluable tree for over story pasture. Some sources report it does fix nitrogen
  • Caragana arborescens  -  Siberian Pea Tree
The Siberian Pea Tree is a hardy deciduous shrub or small tree native to Russia and China. The plant provides habitat for many beneficial organisms such as Lacewing and being a legume fixing nitrogen. It tolerates wind and drought  and grows very fast making this an ideal selection for a windbreak. The dense spiny branches also make it a great hedging plant.
