Während Phil Collins 1985 neben Genesis seine Solokarriere verfolgte, gründete der Gitarrist der Band Mike Rutherford seine eigene Kombo Mike + The Mechanics. Rutherford suchte nach einer künstlerischen Nische, um mit talentierten Songschreibern und Musikern zu experimentieren, ohne sich dabei personell festzulegen. Seine „Mechanics“ bestanden im Kern aus dem Produzenten Christopher Neil, dem Keyboarder Adrian Lee sowie dem Schlagzeuger Peter Van Hooke. Für den Gesang heuerte er Paul Carrack und Paul Young an, die später zu festen Mitgliedern wurden. Und mit der Nische war es direkt mit der Veröffentlichung des Debütalbums vorbei.

Das schlicht Mike + The Mechanics betitelte Album enthielt gleich drei Chartsingles, All I Need Is A Miracle, Taken In und Silent Running. Entgegen dem Zeitgeist handeln die Texte nicht nur von Musikvideos und MTV, sondern von zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen, Individualität, Politik und sozialen Themen. Rutherfords Gitarrensound vermag nicht zu überwältigen, schafft aber die perfekte Grundlage für die Gesangsstimmen. Das stimmungsvolle Schlagzeug und Lees Keyboard geben den Ton des Albums an.

Das Audio-Fidelity-Remastering stammt von Kevin Gray und erscheint als 24-Karat-Gold-CD mit fortlaufender Seriennummer in limitierter Auflage. Auch wenn dies nicht angegeben wird, ist dieses Album zusätzlich in HDCD codiert.

The self-titled Mike + The Mechanics' 1985 debut reached number 26 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts and is best known for the three hit singles that were released from this collection, "All I Need is a Miracle," "Taken In," and "Silent Running."  The band was a side project for Genesis guitarist and co-founding member Mike Rutherford.  The mood-setting drum work of Peter Van Hooke and the keyboard fills from Adrian Lee play a large part in setting the album's tone, and add some pop zest to the majority of the tracks. Rutherford recruited two lead vocalists to sing the words for his music, Squeeze's lead vocalist Paul Carrack and Sad Cafe's Paul Young while Rutherford handled guitars and bass

"Silent Running," featuring lead vocals by Paul Carrack was the single that launched the success of Mike + The Mechanics reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the up-tempo "All I Need Is a Miracle," sung by Paul Young reached #5 on the charts. "Taken In" - a simple ballad that's bettered by Paul Young's genuine emotional charm - rose to #32 on the Hot 100 and #7 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles chart. The songwriting throughout the album is top-notch including the marvelous "A Call To Arms," which began as a Genesis song, co-written by bandmates Phil Collins and Tony Banks. Relative to the era, the songs here aren't just about music videos and MTV but rich in themes of love, relationships, individuality, politics and social issues.

With all of it's members exercising their expertise, the debut album from Mike + the Mechanics posted two Top Ten singles in the span of three months. The songwriting comes out on top before anything else, with the somber stir of "Silent Running," the album's first release, peaking at number six. "All I Need Is a Miracle" followed at number five, with it's Genesis-like tempo and polished chorus, and even "Taken In" cracked the Top 40, a simple ballad that's bettered by Paul Young's genuine emotional charm. Carrack sounds just as sharp as he did with Ace or Squeeze throughout the album's nine tracks, while Rutherford's overseeing of the entire project is apparent. While Mike Rutherford's guitar work isn't overwhelming, both his six-string and bass guitar contributions complete a sound foundation for the vocals. The mood setting drum work of Peter Van Hooke and the keyboard fills from Adrian Lee play a large part in setting the album's tone, and add some pop zest to the majority of the tracks. Even though their next album gave Mike + the Mechanics a number one hit with the darkened "Living Years," their debut reflects a more compliant sound in every aspect.
