It was surface-collected in Northern Africa from an exposed Acheulean site in the Sahara Desert. This Lower Paleolithic tool demonstrates the progress in thinking and design possessed by these evolving humans. Prior to these ancient Saharan Acheulean handaxes, only very crude flake tools existed in the human fossil record. Like many other Lower Paleolithic tools from North Africa, the years of sun, sand and wind exposure in combination with iron minerals indicative of the region have combined to form a dark colored desert varnish on the surface. Despite the thousands of years of exposure the preservation is remarkable as well. This hand axe has NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION. Acheulean Range and CultureThe Capsian culture was a Mesolithic culture centered in the Maghreb but extend the entire length of North Africa.
