Carl Schmidt had set up a factory making sewing machines in Bielefeld, Germany around 1876. Schmidt had already been in business since 1867 with Nickolaus Durkopp and had considerable experience in the sewing machine field but he had split away to form his own company. In 1878, aged 33, Hugo Hengstenberg joined forces with Carl Schmidt.Made at the end of the 19th century it has a stunning Japanning sewing bed with mother of pearl inlay. This indicates its superior quality. This is the 'D' model and has the serial number 327537.Beautiful inlaid case and working key.The metal badge for the distributor of J Silberg of Hamburg is on the front. ConditionFully working, please see photo of mechanics underneath. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character.
