Damage/Repair Small rip on the rope. See photos for more details.

This piece comes with two mallets.

The balafon is a gourd-resonated xylophone, a type of struck idiophone. It is closely associated with the neighbouring Mande, Senoufo and Gur people of West Africa., particularly the Guinean branch of the Mandinka ethnic group, but is now found across West Africa from Guinea to Mali.

In many areas the balafon is played alone in a ritual context, in others as part of an ensemble. In Guinea and Mali, the balafon is often part of an ensemble of three, pitched low, medium and high. Often, balafon players will wear belled bracelets on each wrist, accentuating the sound of the keys.

The balafon is made from a bamboo frame with wooden keys, origianlly rosewood although as wood gets scarcer other hardwoods are sometimes substituted. The wood is then kiln-baked to ensure no moisture remains. The skill involved to craft and play these instruments is immense.

Additional Information: Fulani are a nomadic peoples who have been influential in regional politics, economics, and histories throughout western Africa for over a thousand years. They played a significant role in the rise and fall of the Mossi states in Burkina and also contributed to the migratory movements of people southward through Niger and Nigeria into Cameroon. They were also responsible for introducing and spreading Islam throughout much of western Africa. The height of the Fulani empire was between the early 1800s and early 1900s. This power was consolidated under Usman dan Fodio and was centered in northern Nigeria. Dan Fodio was a devout Muslim who used religious fervor to ignite his troops to undertake a series of holy wars. Following the early success of Islamic warriors, non-Islamic Fulani joined ranks with their fellows to form an extensive and powerful empire.
