IT WAS AFTER WORLD WAR I THAT THESE NOW ICONIC “DEATHSHEADS” BEGAN TO ADORN AMERICAN MOTORCYCLES. THE DESIGN WAS OFFICIALLY COPYRIGHTED IN 1933, REGISTERED IN 1934, AND NAMED “THE FLOATING SPIRIT.” THEN, A DECADE LATER, DURING WWII, AMERICAN COMBAT SOLDIERS ENCOUNTERED GERMAN TROOPS IN BATTLE WHO WERE WEARING SKULL BADGES. THE GERMANS CALLED THE DESIGN ON THE BADGES A “TOTENKOPF.” THE TOTENKOPF DISTINCTLY RESEMBLED THE FLOATING SPIRIT MASCOTS THAT MANY OF THE AMERICAN SOLDIERS HAD MOUNTED ON THEIR HARLEY MOTORCYCLES BACK HOME.
