In the year 1000 Pope Sylvester II. presented a crown to Stephen, the first King of Hungary. This crown came to be regarded as the most valued treasure of the old kingdom of Hungary. No prince was regarded as rightly king unless he had been crowned with St. Stephen's crown; but if he were so crowned, only the most flagrant abuse of power on his part could absolve his subjects from loyalty. In 1439 died King Albert, who had been appointed King of Hungary in right of his wife, Queen Elizabeth. He left a little daughter four years old; but the Magyars had never accepted a female ruler, and so they offered their crown and the hand of Elizabeth to Vladislas, King of Poland.

Elizabeth, however, had hopes of another child, and was determined, if possible, not to give away the sovereign rights of that child in case it should prove to be a son. She knew that, if the Polish king were once crowned with St. Stephen's crown, the people would be irrevocably bound to him; on the other hand, if she could but gain possession of and secrete that crown, the rights of her hoped-for son might be protected. The crown was kept in the strong Castle of Vissegrad, in a deep vault with many doors, strongly locked and sealed; and the castle and the approaches to the vault were carefully guarded. How could she obtain the crown? The difficult and perilous task was undertaken by her trusty attendant and friend, the Lady Helen Kottanner. The story of the sagacity and courage with which she overcame the many grave obstacles she had to encounter is too long for relation here. The moment chosen by the artist for illustration is that in which, having secured the crown, her assistant is secreting it in a cushion in the castle chapel. While thus engaged they are startled by the supposed approach of the guards. After numerous trying and critical adventures the Lady Helen arrived safely with the crown at the Castle of Komorn, where the queen was domiciled; and in the very hour of her arrival the queen was delivered of a son, who, when twelve weeks old, was secretly conveyed to Weissenburg and there crowned King of Hungary. The name of Helen Kottanner is worthily numbered among the heroines of history.
