• For your consideration: • A First-Edition HARDCOVER of:
• “ BREAK , BLOW , BURN : CAMILLE PAGLIA Reads Forth-Three of the World’s Best Poems”
( Pantheon, 2003 ) (Hardcover, First Edition) • BY CAMILLE PAGLIA
• “America’s most provocative intellectual brings her blazing powers of analysis to the most famous poems of the Western tradition—and unearths some previously obscure verses worthy of a place in our canon. Combining close reading with a panoramic breadth of learning, CAMILLE PAGLIA sharpens our understanding of poems we thought we knew, from Shakespeare to DICKINSON to Plath, and makes a case for including in the canon works by PAUL BLACKBURN, WANDA COLEMAN, CHUCK WACHTEL, ROCHELLE KRAUT—and even JONI MITCHELL. Daring, riveting, and beautifully written, BREAK, BLOW, BURN is a modern classic that excites even seasoned poetry lovers—and continues to create generations of new ones .”
—THE PUBLISHER
• “Brazen intellectual PAGLIA whipped up controversy as a liberator of critical thinking from priggishness and pretension, championing pop culture and pornography in erudite yet incendiary essays, last collected in VAMPS & TRAMPS (1994). Now in a more reflective mode, the diva of shock discourse and a veteran of 30 years of teaching, turns to poetry, an art form she treasures for its ‘exhilarating spiritual renewal.’ PAGLIA ’s seemingly racy title is found in one of JOHN DONNE’s Holy Sonnets. It's an appeal to God, not a call to party, and serves as a sure indication that even though she's advocating for serious literature and ‘unfashionable’ humanist values, she’s as free of pedantry and as electrifying as ever.”
—BOOKLIST
• “CAMILLE PAGLIA ’s new collection of close-readings of poetry has the feel of an intimate conversation with the fiery author, during her peak moments of intellectual concentration…. There’s a sense here that we’re seeing a different side of PAGLIA —less explosive, more nuanced; still daring. She’s still handsomely bold, but, this time, in a more impersonal way…. In her ‘war against theory,’ BREAK, BLOW, BURN is a quiet accomplishment—it uses a spiritual voice to direct us to a beautiful inheritance, one that is being squandered by today’s issue-oriented curricula and academia’s cryptic, despiritualized deconstructions. ” —POPMATTERS
• “Not since NORMAN MAILER abandoned his position as socialist anarchist and bought his first dinner jacket had there been such an anti-antinomian and original figure on the American Left…. PAGLIA is always capable of insight…. The trouble is that BREAK, BLOW, BURN reads as if it were written by…the innocent, idealistic, and austere PAGLIA that once was, I prefer the CAMILLE PAGLIA of the 21st century, and I wish she would resume being brilliant and cruel, and herself.” —SAM SCHULMAN, COMMENTARY
• “Anyone still seriously attempting to understand what we've been experiencing as a culture these past fifty years would do well to get acquainted with CAMILLE PAGLIA …. What is quickly apparent is that PAGLIA is an original thinker, offering original perspectives without that careful crafting of proper expressions that please political constituencies.”
—ENNYMAN’S TERRITORY (BLOG) • “The book implicitly and explicitly argues for the essential role of an art form marginalized, according to PAGLIA, not so much by commerce and popular culture as the complacency of an academy besotted by trendy theory and contemporary poets “who treat their poems like meandering diary entries.’ ”
—THREE MONKEYS ONLINE (WEBSITE) • “I hope a lot of people read this book…. There wasn’t a commentary where I didn’t learn something about the poem in question, no matter how familiar the poem was.” —PHILIP MARCHAND, TORONTO STAR
• “Clearly designed as a come-on for bright students who don't yet know very much about poetry…. She flies as high as you can go…. Bold and convincing…. Exemplary…. A rich book.” —CLIVE JAMES, NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
• “PAGLIA ’s vision is always fresh…. She makes a fascinating and challenging reading companion. These essays will inspire anyone to turn back to poetry again.” — THE TIMES (LONDON)
• “PAGLIA ’s picks and appraisals provide the requisite spark for jump-starting returns to poetry .”
—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
• “It will have students storming the walls of tomorrow’s English departments, mad for poetry again.” — ST. PETERSBURG TIMES
• “The chapter on SYLVIA PLATH’s DADDY will take the top of your head off!” –JAMES WOLCOTT
• “As entertaining as it is dazzlingly erudite, BREAK, BLOW, BURN is capable of re-energizing any reader’s engagement with poetry.”
—FRANCINE DU PLESSIX GRAY, THE WEEK
• “Dazzling…. Bursts with her ingenuity…. Brilliant insights…permeate the book…. Readers receive a marvelous education.”
— ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS
• “One must be awed by her vast energy, erudition, and wit.” —WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD • “One of the bravest and most original critics of our day.” —RARITAN • “PAGLIA is a conspicuously gifted writer…and an admirably close reader with a hard core of common sense.” —NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW • “Daring, erudite, entertaining, and infused throughout with PAGLIA ’s inimitable style and passion, this beautifully written book––and the dazzling mind behind it––will entice readers to begin or renew a passionate engagement with poetry. ”

FLAWS. All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized. Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw. It is also possible that we may miss some perfections! Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.
GRADING SYSTEM. For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability): VERY FINE or LIKE NEW FINE (or EXCELLENT) NEAR FINE (or NF) VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+) VERY GOOD (or VG) GOOD FAIR ACCEPTABLE POOR “POOR.” Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”
RETURNS. We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil! (*Get it?)
POP QUIZ. Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math). EXTRA VISUALS.
