This sale is for two modified river worn pebbles. Both have varying bifacial working producing simple cutting or chopping edges. The H. heidelbergensis group that produced such tools are thought to have originated from Asia, arriving in Britain sometime around c420,000 years ago. This particular Homo group used very simple pebble and notched flake tools. The most famous artefact from this particular group is a wooden spear that was found at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, an area from which the Clactonian industry gets it's name. There is currently no supportive evidence to suggest that this early colonising group produced any hand axes.
