For decades the Tartaria Tablets were generally regarded with suspicion, if not hostility, yet they are now recognised as genuine. They were found in 1961 in the grave of a middle-aged 'wise woman' or shaman 'priestess'. The holes in the largest two tablets indicate that the rectangular tablet (which is slightly convex) could be placed on top of the round tablet to hide the symbols on the upper register. Among the symbols are examples of the Danube Script, an undeciphered system of proto-writing that flourished in the host of cultures belonging to the Neolithic civilisation of Old Europe which flourished in eastern and central Europe between 6500-3300 BC. The Tartaria Tablets appear to bear evidence of writing, and yet they predate the earliest writing in Mesopotamia (Proto-Cuneiform) by around fifteen centuries. The writing is undeciphered, yet certain symbols can be discerned, such as a bow and arrow, and the double-chevrons, an iconic Danube Script symbol perhaps concerned with weaving. The small square tablet depicts a composite fish-human, a sprig, and a goat. In addition to the tablets, you can also receive, at no extra cost, The Tartaria Tablets: the world's oldest book?, a five thousand word essay describing the background to the tablets, the culture they belong to, and theories about their significance. To receive this essay, include your email address as a note with your payment. PayPal no longer shares email addresses! Round tablet measures approx. 5.5 cm x 0.8 cm. Rectangular tablet, approx. 5.5 cm x 3 cm x 1 cm. Square tablet, approx. 4 cm x 3 cm x 1 cm (widest points). Unlike the original tablets, which were damaged by being 'cleaned' with acid, these are intended to look as good as they would have done when they were made seven thousand years ago.
