Gift for a Gardner porcelain collectors.                    GARDNER PORCELAIN FACTORY, (RUSSIAN, FOUNDED 1766) The origins of the Gardner Porcelain Factory lie with English banker Francis Gardner, who founded the company in 1766. The initial factory was established in Verbilki, a small village in the Dmitrov district of Moscow Province. The Gardner Porcelain Factory was significant for being the first private porcelain factory in Russia, as the Imperial Porcelain Factory, which was founded in 1744, manufactured porcelain solely for the Russian Imperial Court. Imperial commissions augmented the Gardener Factory’s prestige, and attracted a host of private commissions from wealthy members of the Russian nobility. When more private factories set up in Russia in the 19th century, the Gardner Factory maintained its high standards and continued to enjoy a distinguished reputation for excellence. The porcelain ware exported to the Central Asian, Arabian and Turkish markets was characterized by the Gardner factory mark in Arabic script under-glazing the pottery. The tea services were painted with decorative flowers amidst a white medallion against a deep red, blue or green background. Each earthenware pot, teacup or other tableware had the Gardner emblem - Arabic lettering at the bottom that was the Gardner factory mark. The porcelain manufactured for the Persian market was characterized with floral decorations such as variegated pink peonies and leaves on a sky blue, deep blue, green or red background. The inner rim of several bowls was lined with Islamic script handwritten. The porcelain was also decorated with leafy tendrils, floral bouquets on plain or gilt lined claret backgrounds. Vast collections of Gardner porcelain are now maintained by collectors in Pakistan who realize and appreciate its historic value. The crockery that was once used in opulent households, specifically in Peshawar, has now been recognized as an antique and ancient art.
