Side plate says: BRITISH MADE "NEEDLELITE" SEWING MACHINE MOTOR BY CARTER ELECTRICAL CO LTD ROMFORD ESSEX 1/20 H.P. 200/50 VOLTS UNIV. SERIAL NO 5240 Working order but with issues. The bulb filament is blown. The crinkle black finish is flaky and drops little paint flecks here and there. The bearings are loose in their housings so the spindle can be pulled back and forth a few mm, see photos showing pulley in and out, this also makes it a bit noisy and rattly in operation. It came with a vintage 2 pin plug which is marked Wandsworth B.E.S.A. and this is also a nice collectable item too. The wiring colors are unusual, I started by checking things with a multimeter. Red is earth, connected to the metal body. Black is live, this goes to the socket on the base which would take a foot switch, that would take the form of a simple on off switch. There is no foot switch with the motor, I used a clip lead for testing. Green is neutral and is permanently connected. The bulb voltage is taken directly from the input so reflects whatever the voltage supply is. That is individually switched by a bar push switch adjacent to the bulb holder assembly, push down to turn on, up for off. The brushes have plenty of life in them, see photo of one brush and it's spring. Includes mounting bracket. I cautiously tested it with an isolating transformer for safety and a variac. The motor began to turn with a supply around 100V AC 50Hz, and I increased the voltage to 200V without any observed issues, it continued running, although it was a bit rattly due to the bearing housing interface problems. Basically working but requires some service / restoration work. From what I have read, up until the mid 1960's many appliances were universal, able to run on AC or DC as there were still some areas that had a DC mains supply. I found an old newspaper article online from 1949 saying these Needlelite motors were available then. They were used with Singer sewing machines, possibly others too, as an upgrade from the treadle operation. Weight 1842g Condition: Used, Condition: Working order but with issues.
